Research Proposal: Establishment of an Explainable AI based Framework for Therapeutic Recommendation of Hindustani Ragas, Raga based Songs (including Bollywood songs and Tagore Songs) and Soft Music of other Genres for General well-being and Prevention of Mental Illness Ref.No.SSTCRC2510


1. Introduction

General well-being is not solely defined as the absence of disease; rather, it is a multifaceted amalgamation of an individual's numerous life aspects, including physical, mental, emotional, psychological and social health factors. Problems associated with an individual's mental, emotional, and psychological well-being can have a substantial impact on all aspects of their life, including their physical health and capacity to function. The most common issues related to these are as follows: Anxiety Disorder/Depression/Stress/Emotional Dysregulation/Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)/Substance Abuse and Addiction (Alcohol or Drug Addiction, Behavioral Addictions)/Psychosomatic Disorders/Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)/Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior/Personality Disorders

The issues mentioned above are only a few of the significant problems related to general well-being, however, the problems are not limited to these specific issues.

In the recent years the therapeutic side of music revealed its potential in many diseases e.g. anxiety, depression, insomnia etc. which has gained its fare share of importance because of the ability of non-invasiveness with minimal or no side effects.

The integration of music into the treatment of mental illness can yield significant advantages and improve the overall efficacy of conventional therapies. Music is a critical complementary aid in the treatment of mental health challenges due to its distinctive capacity to influence the physical responses, cognition, and emotions.

Hindustani ragas, which form the nucleus of Indian classical music, have powerful effects on mental health. People think that each raga, with its own set of melodic structure, mood, and emotional quality (the so called “rasa”), can make them feel or think in a certain way. For a common man with non musical background or with musical background but not much knowledge of Indian classical music, the raga-based songs also have these effects on the mind and emotions, making them a healing medium that can help with many mental health issues.


2. Research Progress

The researchers have found that listening to Hindustani ragas or music based on ragas improves their mental health and even helps those with mental illness. Evoking unique emotions (rasa) and moods, each raga is rooted in the ancient Indian classical music tradition and can have a favourable impact on mental health. The benefits that we have found can be listed as in the reduction of Stress and Anxiety that mainly targets the calming the nervous system and emotion regulation. The Alleviation of Depression and Improvement in Sleep helps to relax emotions. For example, Upbeat and joyful ragas, such as Raga Hamsadhwani and Raga Kafi, evoke feelings of happiness, positivity, and hope. It also Enhances the Emotional Resilience for example interacting with ragas such as Raga Bhairav and Raga Shree, which elicit sensations of fortitude and assurance, can enable individuals to confront challenging emotions and obstacles.

In Trauma Recovery and Emotional Healing helps Engaging with introspective ragas such as Raga Shree and Raga Bhimpalasi might facilitate trauma processing in a secure and organised manner.

The effect is not only limited to the above mentioned scenarios but it also used for the Reduction of Aggression and Anger. Slow-tempo ragas of profound emotional depth, such as Raga Darbari Kanada, mitigate aggressive and hostile sentiments by tranquillizing the mind and alleviating emotional turmoil.

4. Benefits & Outputs

Music therapy intervention has been found as an important only limited to improve the behavioural aspect e.g. depression, anxiety. There are many such issues that can be mentioned where music can be beneficial such as; Therapeutic Use in Trauma Recovery (Music Therapy for PTSD, Reprocessing Traumatic Memories), Managing Symptoms of Depression (Alleviating Feelings of Hopelessness, Music Therapy Interventions), Pain Relief and Psychosomatic Symptom Management (Used as a Pain Management Tool, and Relief of Psychosomatic Symptoms), Addressing Anger and Aggression (Channelling Anger), Reduction of Stress and Anxiety (Used for its Relaxation and Calming Effects along with the Distraction from Negative Thoughts), Mood Regulation (Improving Mood and Reducing Depression), Better Sleep (Guided Meditation and Sleep Playlists).

By analysing the deep effect of Hindustani ragas and raga-based songs on the general well being that includes various aspects of a person’s life will be beneficial to further incorporate as therapeutic aspects along with the medications. The proposed work is not limited to the traditional Hindustani ragas, but it also incorporates the songs based on the Hindustani ragas and other soft music that includes western music. The explainable AI based framework will provide the recommendations of ragas, raga-based songs and western music for the patients depending on their current circumstances.
